This The Good Life

what makes life worth living

Hazy Days

It’s been so hot out lately that going outside, even a little, takes either an awesome reason or a bucket full of motivation. Even patio sitting with a cocktail, my all-time favorite thing to do after work, is not anything that interests me.

So, we’ve taken to indoor activities. The hot thing right now in our household is Scrabble. The classic crossword-inspired word game is fun and educational. It also has a fascinating history, dating to the Great Depression, involving a bunch of friends hand stamping tiles in an abandoned schoolhouse, a financial loss after the first year, a discovery by Macy’s in the 1950s, and eventual buyout in 1972. Read more here.

We play almost every day, sometimes more than once. We’re getting better and learning new words. It feels good to be “learning” new words, too. I’d like to have some people over to play with us. It’s fun with just two people, but I think we’d like to practice with others. Even Ollie likes to get in on the action, but he can never stay awake for a whole game.

I have big plans for outdoor Scrabble as well. Hopefully by the Fall, we’ll be enjoying cool nights in the yard, with a drink in hand, a fire going in the fire pit, and an oversized Scrabble board. C’mon over!
